Study Task 5 - Who Are They?

Client groups which use Graphic Design in their products or services

Graphic design is itself in the tertiary sector, the service industry and I feel in terms of client groups - most of the client groups also belong in the service industry within the private and public sectors. Some of the client groups which use graphic design widely are:

Music Industry
Retail groups
Publishing
Journalism
Education
Sports
Enterprise & Finance (e.g. accounting, law, corporate finance groups)
Movie industry
Theatre industry
Food
Health
Personal buyers (e.g. exhibitions, fairs, mail-order goods)
Tourism
Radio
Television

Cient group which reflects my creative ambition

_Retail

I feel on the whole the retail client group suits me the best for my own creative ambitions and for the purpose of this task. I'm referring to retail as it's a broad term and at this stage of my career it's tough to nail down one client group and one exact specific focus of clients I want to work with. Retail can be sports manufacturers, magazines, events, anything which is pretty much for sale or any kind of promotional in the aim of making money through sale or to advertise a sale and this is an area which I'm interested in as in terms of design I feel very much geared towards publishing and editorial design.

What skills and interests I have and how they relate to client group

I feel very much geared towards editorial and publishing and promotional material and I feel this suits retail well, be it store promotional material such as window displays, wall murals to look books and billboards I feel this is an area I can excel in and offer a lot.

One of my main interests in design is to 'graphic design' topics and products which you wouldn't normally associate with that form of design and don't see everywhere but in select locations, for example one of my favourite studios HORT has worked with Nike extensively and created experimental design for a series of basketball promotion and this is the same area I feel I can slot into.

I feel I've improved and become strong and visually striking image, colour and the mixture of type, image and colour is what excites me but in particular contexts. Type, image and colour within a publication, poster, billboard or book layout is exciting and an area I'm strong in, but working within the format of a business card I feel restricted and not too interested and driven in although it's an area I'm trying to engage with at the moment.

What skills are needed and what skills are needed to develop?

Time management skills are essential when dealing with any client but in terms of the retail industry the chances are the amount of material needed will be large as will the amount of content needed, especially in terms of print material so time management and consistency is essential. This is an area I would need to develop, my time-management right now is good but I feel I maybe don't work as efficiently as I could.

Communication and dealing with clients in a professional manner is needed, I currently have little experience in pitching ideas and concepts to professional clients and have little experience when communicating with clients and staying in touch, organising meetings etc. This is an area which would develop itself and has to, any experience obtained beforehand will be incredibly useful and create a better first impression.

Proposal and contextualisation skills and idea selling is important, especially for large clients who may want design on the side of a 10 story building or on a huge billboard, it's not possible to create and place this work for the consumer to see without permission and finance, so proposal and selling the idea is necessary, this is a skill I'm improving in and will need to be at a high standard.

Working with print restrictions and financial restrictions are going to be expected, this is exciting for me as I feel working with restrictions leads to more creative solutions and I've tried to get myself into the habit of restricting myself on briefs and having strict colour palettes and sometimes restricting the amount of process colours used, which is good practice for when working professionally.

My professional/creative aims and how they relate to the needs of the client group

My professional and creative aims are to work and develop a portfolio within editorial, publishing and promotion and to also experiment with moving image and more hands on forms of design such as installations and photographic advertisements and I feel the retail client group suits this perfectly.

It depends which kinds of clients I would gain within the retail industry but my aim is to create progressive, contemporary and experimental design, especially so for topics and consumer groups you wouldn't expect that kind of design for. Again, as HORT have done here in one of their workshops for Lebron James and Nike ::

I also feel the client group will be looking for this kind of professional aim as nowadays we're flooded with material in terms of print and in terms of web, every client will want to stand out and catch the consumers eye, be it through product, placement, promotion or through all of them. Creating unique and innovative design solutions which challenge the format and the theme is what I aim to do professionally, in terms of my work process too. The posters above, one of them is by photocopy and marker with no macs and digital interaction involved and it still achieves its purpose and challenges just what is needed to produce graphic design and this is an area I feel fascinated by and want to engage with more.

The kinds of formats of design I'm interested in is also the kind of material the client group will be after, posters, publications, editorial and promotional material such as lookbooks, books, magazines, billboards, displays etc so I feel my own design style and ambitions match and cater for the kind of material the client group is looking for.
